• Analytical strategies for assessing occupational exposure to antineoplastic drugs in healthcare workplaces
Cytotoxic antineoplastic drugs (ADs), widely used in treating cancer, are considered hazardous in the workplace and thus require safe handling practices. An analytical protocol for environmental and biological AD monitoring in the healthcare environment has been developed, since Europe lacks clear guidelines and regulations for cytostatic preparation and handling.

  • Physicochemical properties of hydroxyapatite materials sprayed with plasma used in implantology
The subject of the research was the assessment of the physico-mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite bioceramics (HAP) sprayed with plasma on Ti-grade 2 titanium substrate (CP-Ti). This method of applying the coating is used in the process of applying layers to implants to better bond them to the bone tissue. In order to carry out the study, hydroxyapatite was prepared according to the wet chemistry technology by separating solid substances from the solution. Subsequently, a titanium substrate was applied, to which hydroxyapatite was applied by plasma spraying technique. The research allows us to state that the properties of the obtained coating can be used to cover large areas of implants of any shape.
  • Endometriosis – The challenge for occupational life of diagnosed women: A review of quantitative studies
The aim of the article was to summarize the results offered in the research on occupational functioning of women with endometriosis. We followed PRISMA guidelines. Database search was done in November 2017 using EBSCO. In the review were included the articles clearly referring to the relationships between endometriosis and work or any aspect of work (e.g., work productivity, work ability, absenteeism). Eight papers were included in the final review. Seven studies were cross-sectional, 1 retrospective. The majority of researchers used standardized research measures, such as Work Ability Index, Work Productivity and Activity Impairment Questionnaire or Health Related Productivity Questionnaire. Only in 2 studies the reference group was considered, one of them consisted of healthy women. The results clearly indicate that endometriosis is a disease that causes major disturbance in occupational functioning of the suffering women. In the future the researchers should search for individual and organizational correlates of the improvement of occupational functioning in this group of patients. The methodology of the existing studies has been evaluated and the methodological cues for future research has been given.
  • Psychological tests in the service of occupational medicine - legal regulations: part II
The article continues critical analysis of the legal aspects of psychological research of various groups of employees. This section discusses issues related to the appeal procedure, documentation, costs and supervision of research. Observations showed their numerous imperfections related to all aspects of research. They result from the incoherence of the provisions of legal acts and the lack of regulation of certain issues. Such a legal status makes it difficult for psychologists to conduct professional activities and adversely affects the quality of services provided. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce changes to the Act and Regulations governing issues related to the performance of psychological tests on the ability to work. A desirable solution, according to the authors, would be to complete the work on possible changes in the law on the profession of psychologist and psychological self-government and to prepare and implement the relevant executive acts.
  • The risk of professional exposure to blood-borne pathogens in paramedics
Medical rescuers through frequent and direct contacts with patients are exposed to exposures to potentially infectious biological material, which may result in occupational injuries. The aim of the study was to assess the risk of occupational hematopoietic infections and the methods of prevention used in this professional group based on a literature review. The research material were data from articles collected in the PubMed, Elsevier, Springer and Google Scholar databases in the years 1987-2017. A comparative analysis of data on occupational exposure to blood among paramedics, reporting of such events and the use of personal protection equipment in individual countries in comparison with data from Poland was made. So far, there have been few epidemiological studies related to occupational exposure to blood among paramedics. Comparison of the conclusions obtained by individual research teams is difficult due to different ways of data collection. This affects the significant variation in the observed results. In addition, some publications show methodological errors, most often the bias of selection. In the world, the percentage of rescuers who underwent exposure in the year preceding the survey varies from 22% in the US to 63% in Thailand. In Poland, analogous percentages range from 14% to 78%. Although this group of professionals is exposed to frequent contact with blood, almost half of the respondents do not report occupational exposures. Information on such events is rare, as is the systematic use of personal protective equipment - protective gloves are regularly used by 53-98% of respondents, masks and safety glasses - 33-62%. This increases the risk of infection with blood-borne pathogens. Therefore, it seems necessary to carry out further, methodologically correct, multi-center studies accurately assessing occupational exposures to blood among paramedics.
  • The doctor's right to inform the employer about contraindications to perform a specific type of work by an employee
The aim of the work is to analyze legal regulations that relate to the obligation to keep medical confidentiality and the possibility of its repeal by providing information about the health condition of the patient's employer. The implementation of the main objective requires answering the following questions: Can the employer obtain detailed data on the employee's health status, going beyond the information on the existence or absence of contraindications to work? Does the doctor have the right to revoke the medical confidentiality concerning the employee's health if the illness diagnosed outside preventive examinations directly hinders / prevents the performance of work at the current position? The material for this work is the legal regulations applicable in Poland relating to the obligation to keep medical confidentiality and specifying the scope of information on the patient's state of health, which may be passed on to his employer.
