  • From variolation to recombination. A brief history of vaccines (3)
The idea of vaccination against infectious diseases is very old. Already the ancient Greeks in the 5th century BC they found that survivors usually do not succumb to disease in its successive waves.
  • Robotization and the number of jobs (6)
The global Sars-CoV-2 epidemic accelerated the process of robotization in the global labor market. According to the latest edition of the World Economic Forum report, published in October 2020, by 2025 the division of working time between people and machines will be almost equal. Experts estimate that it may translate into the liquidation of as many as 85 million jobs worldwide in the next 5 years. Automation processes are, however, expected to create almost simultaneously 97 million new jobs.
  • Artificial intelligence and work safety (7)
Artificial intelligence (AI) is part of the digital transformation and is increasingly being used in manufacturing and other business areas. The questions arise whether it will one day replace people, and to what extent? And what applications does it offer to companies already and what benefits can be gained from using AI?

  • Inventions were awarded in 2020 (13)
Good news - despite the epidemiological threat resulting from the CO-VID-19 epidemic - came from Paris and concerns the sphere of inventiveness. Concours Lepine is an international fair and a competition of inventions with 119 years of tradition. This year, the competition was held in a modified formula, adapted to unusual circumstances.
  • The admissibility of employees refraining from working in health care facilities in the light of the issues of art 210 of the Labor Code (14)
The author analyzes the regulation contained in Art. 210 of the Labor Code with particular emphasis on healthcare professionals. The article discusses the possibility of applying paragraph 5 to healthcare professionals. Further on, the author indicates the position of jurisprudence and doctrine, and proposes a change in the interpretation of Art. 210 § 5 with regard to some of these employees. The current position of jurisprudence and doctrine deprived health care workers of the right to stop work or leave the post if there is a threat to the health or life of the employee or other people. The experience of the COVID-19 epidemic requires a revision of this position, to which the author refers to arguments from the linguistic interpretation of Art. 210 of the Labor Code. Some representatives of the doctrine indicated by the author also seem to agree with the thesis presented in the article.
  • Exposure to electromagnetic field during the use of electric or hybrid vehicles (18)
the rapid development of e-mobility technology and the steadily increasing number of fully electric or hybrid vehicles cause an increase in the number of electromagnetic field sources and electromagnetic emissions in the environment. The article presents the results of the diagnosis and assessment of exposure to electromagnetic field related to the use of electric and hybrid passenger cars in the context of literature data and own research.
  • The influence of masking sound on the intelligibility of unwanted speech sounds in open-plan offices - results of own research (22)
The article presents the results of a computational study, the effect of the use of masking sounds on speech intelligibility at workstations in a typical open space office room. Sounds with four types of frequency spectra and sound levels A in the range of 25-45 dB were taken into account as masking sounds. It has been shown that it is possible to obtain appropriate working environment conditions (including room acoustic properties) at the A-level of masking sound in the range of 31-27 dB (depending on the considered one of the four types of masking sound spectrum).
  • High-speed camera in the work environment - possible applications for the measurement of mechanical vibrations (27)
The article concerns the possibility of using a high-speed camera to measure mechanical vibrations in the work environment. It presents the results of tests carried out on 11 hand tools, related to the values of vibration accelerations measured with a standard measuring system based on piezoelectric vibration transducers. The obtained differences did not exceed 5.7%, which confirms the possibility of using a high-speed camera for testing vibrations acting through the upper limbs. The article also highlights the limitations in the application of image analysis to vibration measurements, resulting from e.g. from the necessity of high optical magnification and ensuring the stabilization of the camera position.
