• Technological curiosities from around the world
More effective desalination Production of cheap, fresh water may soon be possible, thanks to researchers from the University of Texas and Penn State . They managed to solve a problem that scientists had been grappling with for decades. The membranes used in the desalination process and in the general removal of other chemicals from the water are the primary means of water treatment. However, the reactions taking place there are so complicated that there is still a lot of room for research. A group of scientists has solved the difficult problem of these processes, which could lead to cheaper obtaining clean water. They found that desalination membranes have different density and mass distribution, which can affect their performance. The key to efficiency is to be uniform density at the nanoscale. Reverse osmosis systems are a commonly used method of water purification. For the past 40 years, it has not been fully known how exactly fluid moves through them.
  • Powers of the Environmental Protection Inspection with regard to the offenses specified in the "new" Water Law Act
Can the inspector of the Environmental Protection Inspection impose a fine by way of a penal mandate in the case of offenses specified in the Water Law Act of 20 July 2017? Can he apply a caution to these offenses?
  • Man causes extinction of mammals, not climate
Scientists differ in opinions about the causes of extinction of mammals in prehistoric times. Some point to human activities, others to climatic fluctuations, or to the combined human and climate influences that would best explain past extinctions, including representatives of megafauna . According to the latest research, the extinction of mammals in the last 126 thousand. years had more to do with negative human influences than with climatic factors. Human influence explains 96% of all mammalian extinctions at this time.
  • Chrobry was the first
Will the hare survive under the copper plateau? Will the toad resist human aggression? Can the lynx avoid the poacher's barrel? My neighbor says yes. On one condition, however, that man shows maximum reason and empathy. Unfortunately, it doesn't. It is so and it was so. That is why the greats of this world have long, ex officio, protected the natural heritage. On different ways. The ancients sheltered nature objects for religious and moral reasons. This is how the huge erratic boulders that served as sacrificial altars for priests survived. Thanks to beliefs, the Egyptian scarab lived in luxury. For the same reasons, sacred cows, monkeys and crocodiles were protected in India. The oldest information on nature conservation comes from Asia.
  • Elm - an admirable dignity
[...] - a grove of elm trees and poplars, full of pleasant shadows, grew green above it, because the dense foliage of the trees formed a vault.
  • Overview of dogwood species with particular emphasis on its pests and protection in urban green areas
Currently, various species of dogwood are increasingly used for planting in urban green areas. They are mostly trees, shrubs or green plants. For this purpose, the species most resistant to soil and climatic conditions and the action of pests are selected . Dogwoods are a beautiful decoration of many parts of the city, although they can be infected by pathogens or pests. For this purpose, the plantings should be inspected in order to monitor the occurrence of various types of damage, negatively affecting their health and decorative value. According to the current legislation, protection treatments should be based mainly on the use of direct and indirect non- chemical methods of plant protection. However, the use of authorized plant protection products should be limited only to cases of severe infestation by pests . In order to select the most appropriate method of dogwood protection in urban areas , a comprehensive assessment should be carried out concerning the determination of specific pathogens, pests and parameters, such as the physical and chemical properties of the soil, contributing to the formation of non-infectious diseases.
  • Production of engine biofuels using the 3rd generation methods
One of the alternatives of replacing oil, gas and coal is the production of biofuels from algae. Algae (algae) are organisms that create biomass in the process of photosynthesis. They are one of the important (in the future) sources of biomass due to their fast growth rate and relatively high ability to bind carbon dioxide (CO2). They occur in the natural environment of the seas and oceans. Their cultivation is carried out in bioreactors or ponds, where appropriate conditions for their growth are maintained.
  • Miraculous Conversions
Companies involved in the production of harmful goods change their profile and become interested in related markets that do not cause scandal or outrage to customers. Such conversions should be enjoyed. Although they do not have to result from moral motives, they direct human ingenuity and entrepreneurship to areas not burdened with previous damages. The attempts by oil companies to enter the market of renewable resources, observed around the world, herald the reality of a world independent of fossil fuels.
  • Air quality in a single-family house in wooden technology - a case study
Our health and well-being are closely related to the quality of the air we breathe. People spend a large part of the day in closed rooms (home, work), so they should pay attention to the quality of the environment in which they stay. Due to economic aspects and the emphasis on the greatest possible energy savings, the issue of air quality is unfortunately neglected. Striving to achieve the highest possible air-tightness of buildings limits the natural exchange of air between the internal and external environment. Buildings made in wooden technology have a good microclimate, as well as less tightness than buildings made in brick technology, which enables more effective natural air exchange.
  • Protection of the natural environment in Poland in the light of statistical data
The article presents the most important publications of the Central Statistical Office, such as the Statistical Yearbook of the Republic of Poland and industry yearbooks on the most important sectors of the national economy, and - above all - the annual "Environmental protection" and other publications in the field of environmental issues. The scope and structure of the Yearbook of Environmental Protection has changed adversely. Table 7 presents a general assessment of the condition of the natural environment in Poland.
  • 2020 one of the warmest years in history
2020 has gone down in history as one of the warmest. The latest data published by Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), the EU monitor unit ± Ca climate change, show that average global temperatures recorded in 2020. Was the highest on record.
